What the merge process verifies

The merge worker creates a new PDF from the pages of the uploaded source files. Before the finished file is published, the output is reopened and checked against the expected source-page sequence.

• The merged page count must equal the total number of pages found in the source PDFs.
• The width and height of each merged page are checked against the corresponding source page.
• Page rotation is checked for each page in the merged sequence.
• Files are processed in the submitted file order, while pages inside each source PDF retain their source order.

These checks are useful for confirming the basic page structure of the merge, but they are not a claim that the new file is byte-for-byte identical to the originals. Document metadata, interactive forms, embedded scripts, digital signatures, attachments, and other advanced PDF features are not part of this verification.

Choose the file order before merging

A merged PDF is easiest to use when its source files are already arranged in the intended reading sequence. For example, a report might begin with a cover page, continue with the main report, and finish with appendices. An application packet might place the application first and supporting records afterward.

After upload, review the displayed filenames and use the Move up and Move down controls until the order is correct. The merge worker uses that submitted sequence. If you later need to change individual page positions inside the completed file, use the Reorder PDF Pages tool.

Common reasons to combine PDF files

Combining related files can make a multi-document package easier to review, archive, attach, or submit. Typical examples include monthly statements, invoices and receipts, signed contract sections, scanned records, school assignments, application materials, and reports with supporting exhibits.

Merge PDF combines existing PDFs; it does not select important pages for you or change their content. If a source file contains pages you do not want in the final document, prepare it first with Split PDF or Delete PDF Pages.

What can cause a merge to fail?

Each source file must be readable by the PDF merge engine. A file can fail if it is not actually a valid PDF, if it is encrypted in a way the engine cannot open, or if its structure is unsupported. The worker validates source files before publishing the completed output.

If a merge fails, the job does not publish a completed merged PDF. Temporary merge output is cleaned up rather than being presented as a successful download. If one source file causes a failure, try opening that PDF normally, replacing it with another exported copy, or processing the remaining files separately to identify the problematic document.

File handling and scheduled cleanup

The browser interface sends selected PDFs to the server so the merge worker can process them. Generated output is also stored on the server long enough to provide the download.

Uploaded and generated files become eligible for scheduled cleanup after 60 minutes. Cleanup runs periodically, so the site does not claim that every file disappears at the exact 60-minute mark. Avoid uploading material you are not comfortable processing through an online server-based tool.

After you merge

Review the downloaded PDF before sending or archiving it, especially when the source documents contain forms, signatures, links, attachments, or other interactive features. Confirm that the page sequence and the content you need are present.

If the merged file is too large for your next step, you can try Compress PDF. If individual pages need a different orientation or sequence, use the rotation or page-reordering tools after the merge.
